BMW is updating and electrifying its lineup for the summer, OS 8.5 available in July

BMW expands its electric lineup with three new models

BMW expects 50% of its total sales in 2030 to be electric vehicles, and it’s rolling the ball by introducing EV models for all of its series. Since it launched its first EV model in 2013, the BMW i3, the German automaker also introduced the BMW i4, BMW i7, and BMW iX in the U.S. market.

The Mini Cooper SE is also one of the most affordable electric cars on the market, and BMW is teasing new Mini Cooper EV models that will be available next year. Even Rolls Royce, which BMW owns, is road testing its upcoming electric car.

BMW is just getting started in the EV segment, and it has recently announced three new EV models in its lineup. The new models include BMW i4 xDrive40, BMW 750e xDrive, and BMW i7 eDrive50 which will be available this fall. What can we expect?

The cheapest model is the all-wheel drive 2024 BMW i4 xDrive40 which starts at $62,595 inclusive of the shipping cost. It comes with dual electric motors that can deliver 396 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque — this is more powerful than the single-motor BMW i4 eDrive 40 with 335 horsepower. However, the 2024 BMW i4 xDrive40 won’t be as powerful as the all-wheel drive i4 M50, which has 536 hp.

In addition, the incoming BMW i4 xDrive40 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, which is fast. It will also come with an 80.7 kWh battery, which should cover 307 miles after a full charge if you’re using standard 18-inch wheels. But if you prefer 19-inch wheels, the range will reduce to 282 miles.

BMW is also introducing a plug-in hybrid model to the 7 Series dubbed the 750e xDrive, which starts at $107,995, including the transportation fee. Its driving range is expected to exceed 35 miles. Still, its most impressive feature is the 3-liter, six-cylinder engine under the hood that works with an electric motor to produce 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.

Another entry to the 7 Series is a rear-wheel drive model known as the i7 eDrive50 — it starts at $106,695 inclusive of the destination cost. This comes after BMW announced its most powerful EV — the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, which can produce 650 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the i7 eDrive50 can produce 449 horsepower — this still doesn’t match up to the BMW i7 xDrive60 which can deliver 536 horsepower.

Beyond that, BMW will update the BMW 740i with an intelligent all-wheel drive option. However, the BMW 740i xDrive is not an EV model — the latest model comes with a 3-liter turbocharged inline-six gasoline engine that can produce 375 horsepower.

All the new models are expected to be delivered starting this fall, 2023. BMW also says it will update its operating system in July, beginning with the BMW i4, BMW iX, and BMW 7 Series models.

BMW teases new 5 series, with an i5 EV model for the first time ever
BMW is rolling out its new 5 series later this year, and there will be an i5 version
BMW i5 electric sedan under a cover parked in a studio.

The current, seventh-gen BMW 5-Series has been around since 2017. Seven model years is practically forever for a luxury vehicle, especially one as storied as the midsize 5-Series. BMW has some large plans in store for the new, eighth-gen 5-Series that will be unveiled in October 2023 and shared a few details on the upcoming midsize sedan recently.
The sedan will be more multifaceted than ever and will be offered with gas engines with mild-hybrid 48-volt systems, a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and a new all-electric powertrain in the i5. The latter will mark the first time BMW has introduced an all-electric version of the 5-Series.

Before you get too excited, there’s not a lot of information to go off of here. But the big news for those of us in America is that the upcoming electric i5 sedan will be getting the same M treatment as the current i4 M50 that’s on sale. BMW refuses to call the performance-oriented i5 an electric M5, which leads to believe that it might use something like “M50” for the sporty i5.
“The all-electric BMW i4 M50 shows how BMW blends dynamic performance and electric mobility to perfection,” said BMW CEO Oliver Zipse at the BMW Group Annual Conference 2023. “It was the best-selling BMW M model worldwide in 2022. A fully electric Performance model from BMW M GmbH will also be included in the BMW 5-Series line-up.”
Clearly, BMW has seen that there’s space in its electric lineup for a new sedan that we assume would slot in above the compact i4 and below the large i7. While the U.S. will probably only get the sedan version of the i5, buyers in Europe will also be able to purchase a wagon, or Touring, model. That’s great news for European enthusiasts that were expecting to see wagons die in the electric revolution.

BMW’s latest all-electric concept is a beach-ready scooter with a surfboard
The battery-powered scooter is the resulting lovechild from BMW Motorrad and Vagabund Moto
BMW CE 04 Vagabund Moto Concept parked in the middle of a studio with a man looking at the scooter.

Based on the photos that BMW Motorrad, BMW's motorcycle arm, released of the BMW CE 04 Vagabund Moto Concept, one would assume that it’s an art piece that’s meant to sit front and center in a Los Angeles apartment. But that’s not the case. The CE 04 is the latest concept from the two companies and is an all-electric scooter with an eye on urban mobility, but somehow, it has a rack to carry a matching surfboard. Yeah, we’re a little confused by the concept, but in a good way.

If you’re familiar with the Austrian-based Vagabund, you’re probably not surprised by the CE 04 Concept. Vagabund Moto is a design studio that’s created some pretty radical car and motorcycle concepts, many of which utilize BMW’s bikes as the base. The team at Vagabund have a history of making some incredible concepts, so the CE 04 Concept fits right in with their theme of urban machines with an eye-catching design.

BMW just made a critical (and expensive!) change to its M series X5 and X6
BMW's X5 M and X6 M: Hope you’re ready for the electrified future, because it’s arrived
2024 BMW X5 M and X6 M Competition parked in front of a glass building in the desert with mountains in the back.

After seeing the changes that BMW made for the 2024 X5 and X6 midsize SUVs, we were expecting to see similar changes for the high-performance M variants. As we expected, the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition arrive with similar changes that include updated exterior designs and new tech features. More importantly, the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition mark a new era for BMW’s M-badged vehicles, as they’re the first to come with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that supplements the V8.
Let’s start with the SUVs’ engines. Both come with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that’s heavily revised compared to the outgoing models. The S68 is rated at 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. The mild-hybrid system consists of an electric motor that’s integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission’s housing. It adds 12 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. The 48-volt system also acts as a starter generator for the SUVs.
